I've purchased 3 sets of tyres and 2 sets of rims from Rod in the past, had my 4wd serviced there also numerous times and have been more than happy with the service. Trying to find a good tyre in 215/60/15 for an EL Fairmont Ghia. I'm set on 215 because that extra bit of width seems to make all the difference in wet takeoffs, plus tyres are cheaper than panels (and I'm picky about tyres). I bought a dozen FM901's in this size ($140!) but they're all gone now and have been discontinued - they were just amazing tyres, as good as any I've tried (even better than SP Sport 9000's at twice the price). Sadly it seems there's not much in this size for performance tyres, suppose everyone with 15" rims on a street car have upgraded to 17"-19" (with the crap ride and ridiculous cost that comes with it). Family tyres like SP300's aren't good enough, if I could get SP3000A's in this size they would do (wear/life is not an issue, raw grip is the objective. Ideally it would be one of the top 5 tyres in Motor mag's tyre test, $250 is the sort of money I'm happy to pay. Back when 15" was commonplace (EF XR6 came out stock for example), performance 215/60/15's were readily available. Since the move to larger rims the demand had dropped off, and the manufacturers have discontinued accordingly. Hence the challenge!

Just a follow-up. I left this issue in limbo for a while and threw 16" rims off my other car on it as they had good tyres. This week I made some further enquiries - a mob in Bendigo (Wood Street) did a bit of searching and said Bridgestone has 215/60R15 in Potenza Adrenaline RE001! And with good stock. Made in Australia too which means they shouldn't be too sensitive to exchange rates (but still oil-dependent). The best bit - $175 fitted! So I'll make a few calls and ensure this is a good price (though I'm tempted to not bother) and grab 12... When I get em in I'll report back.

Update: Bridgestone GIII's were hen's teeth when I got around to ordering so I kept looking. Found something suitable in a Bridgestone 'Adrenalin' RE001 - 215/60R15. While they haven't been run in yet and still have the oil coating (still on the 16"s) the short drive back showed they were more than capable and seem to be the best choice out there. And they're Australian made. The staggering thing was the price - while RRP's varied, my good old mates at Borough Tyre Service managed to find a supplier where they could resell fitted at $150 each! Yep, $150! An absolute bargain, I think it was a special so I grabbed a couple of sets (yep, kept cool/dark/dry/clean!) for the road. When I get a chance to fit them back I'll post back with wet/dry grips (accel/braking, cornering, lateral), handling, noise and braking if I get time. FWIW I also found a great model in 16 inch (225/50R16). It's the Dunlop Direzza DZ101 which is a Jap tyre. Is very similar in handling and performance to the old Dunlop FM901 which was my preferred tyre till it was discontinued. Maybe 95% as good but quieter - and they're on runout/discontinued so Borough Tyre Service found them for $170 each! (upps, maybe I shouldn't have mentioned them, I hope there's some still around when I get the next lot.
